This ornament is usually worn within the Magar community, one of Nepal’s most populous ethnic groups. Traditionally silver, some wealthy families today prefer to make the Raiya from gold.
This cuff is worn at weddings and important festivals. Among Magars in central Nepal, before her marriage, the bride can demand a Raiya of a certain weight from the groom’s family. It is typically worn between two other bangles rather than by itself.
