Today is Buddha Jayanti, the 2577th anniversary of the birth of Gautam Buddha in Lumbini, Nepal.
Though a pall hangs over this year’s celebrations following last week’s massive earthquake, devotees thronged Swayambhunath’s temple grounds in west Kathmandu this morning to offer flowers and receive blessings. The main stupa itself is unscathed, but extensive damage to the surrounding structures means it remains closed until further notice. For many in Kathmandu, it is a day to reflect and be thankful.
